Types of Portuguese Citizenship Applications
When applying for Portuguese citizenship, there are several pathways or routes you can explore based on your individual circumstances. Each pathway has specific eligibility criteria and requirements. Our experienced team is here to guide you through the process and help you choose the most suitable option.
Each pathway has its own set of requirements, timelines, and documentation, making the application process unique for each individual. Our team of experts will carefully assess your circumstances and advise you on the best route to follow, ensuring a successful and smooth application.
Here are the main pathways for requesting Portuguese citizenship:
Descent from Portuguese parents/grandparents
If you have Portuguese parents or grandparents, you may be entitled to citizenship by descent. This pathway requires proof of Portuguese lineage, establishment of filiation, and fulfillment of certain documentation requirements.
Marriage or Civil Union with a Portuguese citizen
If you have been married to or living in a civil union/de facto partnership with a Portuguese citizen for a certain period (at least 3 years), this family bond is registered/recognized in Portugal, and you meet other requirements, you may apply for citizenship based on your marriage.
Citizenship Based on Residence
This pathway allows foreign citizens who have resided legally in Portugal for a specific period (usually 5 years) to apply for citizenship. You must demonstrate integration into Portuguese society and meet certain residency requirements.
Sephardic Jewish Ancestry
Individuals of Sephardic Jewish descent with historical ties to Portugal can apply for citizenship under a specific program that recognizes their connection to the country. This program will be in effect until December 31, 2023.
Former Portuguese Territories
People born in the former Portuguese territories of the African continent and the member countries of the former State of India may have the opportunity to apply for citizenship under certain conditions related to the history of those territories.
